Problem

EmployAI is a Data Analytics software company for small e-commerce brands. It is an early-stage startup with 2 customer design partners, beta users, and one investor. Currently, EmployAI finished developing MVPs.

Summary of research findings

I conducted a thorough competitive analysis of 15+ companies to identify key pain points that require resolution for our users.

Design goal

In order to help users quickly get business insights, our team set 3 design goals.

How: I experimented with two mid-fidelity design approaches to determine the optimal content display method.

Ver 1 (Chosen)-Click and expand insights | Suggestions as an alert

Ver 2 - Insights as an alert | Suggestions stays at the bottom

✅ Pros

  • Letting users to click on the variables they are interested in, encourage more engagement

  • One of the “Persuasive Design” methods to use recognition rather over recall

  • Letting Users to easily close, refresh and get new summarized insights

Cons

  • Might be hard for users to find the right business insight they need unless the algorithm rocks

✅ Pros

  • Giving less things to do for users and let them passively participate in the dashboard

  • Insights are all organized at the bottom so the users can easily pick and choose

Cons

  • Users might want a summarized insight in an intuitive way

  • Unable to give users a details about the variables

Challenge #1 - What contents should be displayed, and How?

What : Based on the user needs, the dashboard should contain the following features:

  1. Overview section displaying the overall change.

  2. Section indicating the variables that have impacted business insights.

  3. Detailed information about specific variables.

  4. Summarized insights.

How should each charts be represented and why?

Challenge #2 - Which charts should be used, How and Why?

Which charts are appropriate for each contents to be included?

  1. Overview section displaying the overall change - Line Chart

  2. Section indicating the variables that have impacted business insights - Bar Chart

  3. Detailed information about specific variables. - Pie chart / Bar Chart / Bi-direction Bar Chart (depends on which information should be highlighted from the original variable)

  4. Summarized insights.

  1. Line chart : Shows data trend and can help make prediction
    Appropriate for the Overview section

  2. Bar Chart : Shows segment of information. Useful to compare different categorical groups
Appropriate for indicating the variables that have impacted BI

  3. Bi-direction Bar Chart : Display two sets of data in one graph
Appropriate for showing both negative and positive impacts

Why specific charts are chosen

How the colors are chosen - Colors in data visualization are crucial as they can mislead users.

  1. Line chart for an Overview : Used neutral colors to avoid adding extra information.

  2. Bar chart for variables : Used neutral colors for the same reason as above. This section is for displaying and comparing variables, not for showing direct insights.

  3. Bi-direction Bar Chart - Use red for negative results and green for positive results.

Challenge #3 - How to tailor user’s “Customization” experience & “Scalability”

Result

Data Visualized dashboard- prototype

  • I found myself drawn to the challenge of B2B product ambiguity and discovered a passion for it.

I thrive on the challenge of learning new products, even with limited resources. I take initiative to schedule one-on-one meetings with data scientists outside the company to gain a deeper understanding of the product.

  • In just 4 weeks, I led the product design process from ideation to interactive prototype.

I discovered my natural ability to swiftly comprehend new products and identify optimal solutions.

  • I skillfully selected the best charts and contents for optimal user comprehension and delved deeply into crafting an scalable, intuitive data dashboard.

I have a thorough understanding of each chart's specific needs and how to effectively utilize them for straightforward data visualization. Additionally, I possess the ability to create scalable dashboards that can accommodate various input data sources.
